Hyperhidrosis

Condition descriptions

Hyperhidrosis is a medical condition characterized by excessive and uncontrolled sweating, caused by overactive sweat glands. It can affect the armpits, hands, feet, face, or back and occurs even without heat or physical exertion.

Frequent but often underdiagnosed, hyperhidrosis causes significant social and professional discomfort that affects daily quality of life. This condition is not inevitable; effective medical treatments exist.

At Clinique SkinIn, located in the heart of Quartier Dix30 in Brossard, our experts offer targeted and personalized treatments to sustainably reduce excessive sweating, with visible results within the first few weeks.

Causes

Hyperhidrosis can be primary (without an identifiable medical cause) or secondary (linked to a disease or medication). The most common causes are:
  • Genetic predisposition and sympathetic nervous system dysfunction, which excessively activates sweat glands

  • Stress, anxiety, or strong emotions, particularly in social or professional situations

  • Hormonal disorders: menopause, hyperthyroidism, menstrual cycle variations

  • Certain medications that stimulate sweating (antidepressants, antihypertensives)

  • Environmental factors: heat, humidity, synthetic clothing, spicy foods

How to prevent it

To limit excessive daily sweating:
  • Wear breathable clothing made of cotton or linen, avoiding synthetic materials

  • Use a medical antiperspirant containing aluminum salts

  • Avoid caffeine, alcohol, and spicy foods, which stimulate sweat glands

  • Practice relaxation techniques (meditation, heart coherence, yoga) to reduce trigger stress

  • Maintain rigorous skin hygiene and thoroughly dry affected areas to prevent irritation

Recommended treatments

Treatments are tailored to the location and severity:

Medical antiperspirants

First-line treatment for mild to moderate forms. Applied at night on dry skin, they temporarily block the sweat glands.

Neuromodulator injections

Gold standard treatment for moderate to severe forms. The neuromodulator temporarily blocks nerve transmission to the sweat glands, reducing perspiration by 80 to 90% in the treated area. Results last 4 to 6 months, and the procedure is quick, with no social downtime. Applicable to armpits, hands, and feet.

Regular follow-up allows for adjusting session frequency and maintaining long-term comfort.

Recommended products for the condition
